Notes on the American Studies 402W Student Film Projects
|
The short films on this page were collaborative student projects from the Fall 2003 American Studies 402W Space / Race / Bodies course, taught at university of colorado by Dr. Paul Youngquist. In addition to science fiction and critical readings, students worked on these films, each of which were intending to demonstrate the intersection of Space and Bodies with technology or culture.
The Reality Interrupted project was a "warm up," introducing students to the concepts/practices of short film development, the technology (Apple hardware running iMovie 3 with video capture hardware), and form. All groups completed their videos, from start to finish, in about three hours on a single day. (Project thesis statement, material inventories, storyboards, and "scripts" were all completed in the weeks prior to "hands on" equipment access.)
The Reality ReCombined project was the course "final," giving students a chance to apply what they'd previously learned to create a more polished piece--with an emphasis placed on message and form. All groups completed their videos, from start to finish, in about five hours on a single day. (Project thesis statement, material inventories, storyboards, and "scripts" were all completed in the weeks prior to "hands on" equipment access.)
Key successes with these projects include: True collaborative, in-classroom work. Leveraging mobile technology to introduce film editing to complete novices. Critical success--the final projects demonstrate a strong understanding of the course material. Several of the projects are good short films in their own right, course material and interfacing, aside.
NOTE: You will need Apple's newest Quicktime Player installed on your computer to view these movies.
